Scientist I/II - Product Engineering

Position Overview:
The Scientist I/II is a highly experienced scientific individual contributor and emerging people leader within the Product Engineering department, responsible for designing, executing, and interpreting complex, multi-experiment scientific studies that support the development of implantable medical devices and combination products for cell therapy applications. This role provides deep domain expertise and independent scientific judgment across product development, process development, and preclinical readiness. The Scientist I/II works on highly complex problems, defines experimental strategies, develops novel methods and analytical approaches, and partners cross-functionally with Discovery, Process & Analytical Development, Preclinical Development, Quality, and Regulatory teams to advance programs from concept through preclinical and early clinical stages. This on-site role may include management of interns or direct reports and is based at Morphocell Technologies headquarters in the Greater Montreal Area
Key Responsibilities:

Conceive, design, and execute complex, multi-experiment studies of high organizational impact.

Develop and refine experimental strategies, methods, and evaluation criteria where limited precedent exists.

Apply deep scientific knowledge to address highly complex problems requiring evaluation of unknown factors.

Serve as a subject matter expert across scientific domains relevant to device-cell combination products.

Identify, evaluate, and implement new technologies, methods, and analytical approaches to advance product and process understanding.

Challenge existing scientific assumptions and propose creative, data-driven solutions.

Identify technical risks and recommend mitigation strategies to ensure program success.

Contribute to development of company-wide scientific concepts, principles, and best practices.

Generate high-quality scientific data to inform device design decisions, material selection, and process optimization.

Collaborate closely with Product Engineering to evaluate device-cell-hydrogel interactions and performance.

Develop, improve, and validate complex analytical assays and laboratory processes.

Support translation of scientific findings into development-ready product and process specifications.

Explain complex scientific concepts and data to diverse technical and non-technical audiences.

Influence cross-functional teams and project direction through expert communication and data-driven recommendations.

Support cross-functional deliverables and ensure scientific alignment across programs.

Represent the scientific function in internal and external technical discussions as needed.

Initiate and manage projects of moderate scope, defining objectives, timelines, and resource needs.

Develop and manage multi-experiment timelines aligned with functional and company goals.

Effectively plan and manage complex resource requirements in a cross-functional environment.

Contribute to functional budgeting and annual operational planning activities.

May directly manage interns or junior scientific staff, providing coaching, performance feedback, and development support.

Review and approve technical documentation, data packages, and reports.

Train and mentor team members in advanced laboratory techniques and scientific best practices.

Ensure data integrity, documentation quality, and adherence to internal quality systems.

Educational Background:
B.S., M.S. or PhD in a scientific discipline (e.g., biology, bioengineering, biomedical sciences, chemical engineering, or related field), or equivalent experience in engineering or applied sciences. Post-doctoral experience may be considered.
Experience / Knowledge / Abilities:

Minimum of 4-6 years of relevant industry or post-doctoral experience with a record of sustained performance and accomplishment.

Expert knowledge of scientific principles, specialized concepts, and advanced laboratory practices.

Demonstrated success in scientific creativity, independent thought, and cross-functional collaboration.

Proven ability to work on highly complex problems requiring in-depth evaluation of multiple factors.

Demonstrated ability to develop methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria with limited oversight.

Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Experience with cell culture, tissue culture, and complex biological assays required.

Familiarity with regulated development environments and quality systems preferred.
