Scientist II - Product Engineering

Position Overview: 

The Scientist II is an experienced scientific individual contributor within the Product Engineering department supporting the design, development, assembly, and evaluation of implantable medical devices and combination products for cell therapy applications. This role builds on the Scientist I foundation and is characterized by greater technical independence, ownership of multiple parallel workstreams, and meaningful contribution to device and combination product innovation. The Scientist II independently drives experimental and technical activities that directly impact device design, assembly methods, process development, and preclinical readiness. This individual is expected to manage multiple projects simultaneously, mentor junior team members, and proactively identify and implement improved technical approaches. The Scientist II operates with limited supervision, serving as a technical resource within Product Engineering and across cross-functional teams. This on-site role is based at Morphocell Technologies headquarters in the Greater Montreal Area.

 

Key Responsibilities: 

 

  • Independently design, plan, execute, and interpret complex experiments supporting development of implantable devices and combination products using design control methodology.

  • Lead hands-on device and combination product assembly activities for both small-scale prototyping and larger-scale builds.

  • Develop, refine, and optimize device assembly methods, including evaluation of alternative membrane sealing approaches.

  • Apply appropriate statistical and analytical approaches to evaluate experimental data and draw scientifically sound conclusions.

  • Perform complex laboratory operations and analytical assays including cell culture, tissue culture, and cell-based functional testing.

  • Generate scientific and technical data to inform material selection, assembly processes, and product performance.

  • Independently identify technical gaps, troubleshoot device or process performance issues, and propose practical, innovative solutions.

  • Contribute directly to process development and scale-up considerations for device and combination product assembly.

  • Support development and execution of in vitro assays and preclinical-relevant test methods.

  • Manage multiple projects or technical workstreams simultaneously, balancing competing priorities while maintaining timelines and quality.

  • Independently plan experimental and assembly activities aligned with program milestones and functional objectives.

  • Deliver high-quality results on time with appropriate scientific rigor and documentation.

  • Work closely with engineers, scientists, preclinical, quality, and regulatory colleagues to align technical work with program objectives.

  • Clearly communicate experimental results, technical risks, and recommendations to cross-functional stakeholders, including leading technical design reviews.

  • Contribute to technical decision-making with well-supported data and practical implementation plans.

  • Author and review technical documentation including study plans, protocols, reports, data summaries, and development reports.

  • Contribute to SOPs and work instructions related to device assembly and laboratory processes.

  • Ensure work is conducted in accordance with internal quality systems and good laboratory practices.

  • Mentor junior scientists, research associates, interns, or technicians on laboratory techniques, device assembly methods, and best practices.

  • Support design verification activities including test method development, protocol execution, and data analysis.

  • Participate in root cause investigations and structured problem-solving related to device performance or assembly issues.

  • Contribute to risk-informed development activities (design inputs, failure modes, or process robustness considerations).
     

Educational Background:
 

B.S., M.S. or PhD in a scientific discipline (e.g., biology, bioengineering, biomedical sciences, chemical engineering, or related field), or equivalent experience in engineering or applied sciences. Post-doctoral experience may be considered.

 

Experience / Knowledge / Abilities:

  • 2+ years of relevant industry or advanced research experience

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex problems of moderate-to-broad scope.

  • Hands-on experience with device or combination product development for cell & gene therapies and laboratory-based testing.

  • Experience with cell culture, tissue culture, and cell handling required.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and projects in parallel.

  • Demonstrated mentorship or technical training of junior team members.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
