Research Associate I/II - Process Development

Position Overview:

The Research Associate (RA) I/II will be a key contributor within the Process and Analytical Development (PAD) team, supporting the development, characterization, and optimization of manufacturing processes and analytical methods to advance innovative therapies for liver disease. The ideal candidate is a motivated and collaborative scientist with a strong attention to detail, a solid foundation in laboratory execution, and a demonstrated commitment to continuous learning.

This role requires hands-on experience with pluripotent stem cell (PSC) culture. Experience in cell and gene therapy process development, bioprocessing, or scale-up activities is considered a strong asset. The successful candidate will demonstrate increasing independence, proactively seek opportunities for professional growth, and consistently contribute to improvements in technical execution and team workflows.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute laboratory experiments using a structured, well-documented workflow.

  • Develop detailed experimental plans, work instructions, and data collection templates prior to laboratory execution.

  • Stage experiments by preparing all required reagents, consumables, and materials in advance of wet lab activities.

  • Set up, operate, and tear down single-use stirred tank reactors (STRs), including probe calibration, sterilization, and preparation of associated tubing assemblies and accessories.

  • Perform cell cryopreservation activities.

  • Culture and differentiate induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) across multiple formats, including suspension cultures and STR-based systems.

  • Conduct process manipulations and collect samples in accordance with approved experimental plans.

  • Perform routine analytical assays and ensure contemporaneous and accurate data capture.

  • Analyze experimental data, including the application of appropriate statistical methods, data visualization, and interpretation of results.

  • Demonstrate increasing technical autonomy and scientific judgment over time.

  • Author, review, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, supporting experimental activities, knowledge sharing, and technology transfer initiatives.

  • Operate process development equipment and instruments, contributing to their routine maintenance and upkeep.

  • Actively support a strong safety culture by adhering to safety policies and assuming designated safety-related roles as required.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing team efficiency, data quality, and operational robustness.

Qualifications:

  • BSc or MSc in Bioengineering, Cell Biology, Biotechnology, or a related discipline, with relevant laboratory experience.

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in pluripotent stem cell culture and differentiation; experience with suspension cultures is strongly preferred.

  • Experience in bioprocessing, including operation of stirred tank reactors (STRs), is preferred but not required.

  • Proven experience performing routine analyses using flow cytometry, qPCR, and ELISA.

  • Strong analytical skills, including experience applying descriptive statistics to experimental data.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present data and technical findings.

  • Excellent organizational skills and effective time management in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to problem solving and collaborative teamwork.

  • A professional, open, and collaborative demeanor, with a willingness to be mentored, mentor others, and support team objectives as needed.

  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification is considered an asset.

  • Experience working in office and laboratory environments in compliance with standard safety practices, with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards.

  • Physical ability to perform job duties in office and laboratory settings, including use of standard office equipment, lifting up to 20 pounds, and maintaining focus despite interruptions.

  • Availability to work occasional weekends, as required.
